Space Heater Safety Tips

One of the easiest and most effective ways to add extra warmth to your home in cold weather is with the use of space heaters. For those areas that just need a little boost of heat, rooms that aren’t frequently used, basements and garages, etc., space heaters can add the perfect level of comfort when cranking up the furnace would be too much. Space heaters are handy and easy to use, but there are safety tips that have to be observed whenever they are in use. Make sure you follow these space heaters safe:

Read All Instructions Before Using a Space Heater

It may seem like all you need to do is plug in your space heater and turn it on but take a few minutes to read the instruction manual included with it so that you know how to use it safely and effectively.

Place Space Heaters in Safe Locations

Space heaters should be used only in open, clear, clean areas. The general rule is that they must be clear on all sides by at least 3 feet. Most space heaters are designed to stay cool on all sides and to automatically shut off if they become overheated or get knocked over. However, since they do produce heat, leaving a safe clearance around them on all sides is still a good idea.

Make Sure Space Heaters are in Good Working Condition

Even if your space heaters were in perfect condition when you last put them away, it is still necessary to check them every time you take them out to be used. If there are any signs of cracks, damage to cords, etc., then you should not use the space heaters. Even though the damage may seem minimal and harmless, even cosmetic, it is better not to take any chances when the safety of your home and family are concerned.

Put Space Heaters Away When Not In Use

You may be tempted to leave your space heaters out even when they aren’t being used. It seems pretty convenient to do so. However, leaving them out all the time increases the chances that they could become damaged. Take the time to wipe them down and put them away until the next time you need them so that they will be clean and in good working order for future use.

Never Plug Space Heaters into Power Strips

Never plug a space heater into a power strip or extension cord as they are not designed to handle the type of current flow required to operate a space heater. As a result, they can overheat and catch fire. Always plug space heaters directly into wall outlets and always keep an eye on space heaters when they are in use.

Check Areas Around Outlets for Excessive Warmth or Heat

Check the wall around the electrical outlet where your space heater is plugged in. If it feels warm or hot to the touch, this can be an indication that there is a potentially serious problem. Unplug the space heater and contact an electrician right away. Do not use the outlet at all until the issue has been resolved. Plug your space heater into a different outlet.

Do Not Leave Space Heaters Unattended When In Use

Good quality space heaters are designed to be safe, but it is still important to keep an eye on any space heaters while they are in use. It’s tempting to put them in place, turn them on, and forget them, but it isn’t safe to leave them unattended.

Have Working Smoke Detectors In Your Home

This is, of course, important in every home at all times, but having smoke detectors in good working order when you are using space heaters is especially important. You want to make sure every safety precaution is taken to protect their home and family. Smoke detectors provide an added layer of security.
